Optical Roughness and Roundness Measurement in Production
05/02/2010
Grinding and finishing are important production processes for the manufacture of highly strained functional surfaces, such as rolls, gear and engine shafts and roller bearings. Due to the process complexity, it is oftentimes difficult to produce large quantities under consistent working conditions. The input material, cooling liquid supply, wear of the grinding discs, dressing and various other setting parameters are subject to constant changes and need to be supervised. A simple method of observing the process quality is frequently inspecting the surface on its roughness, form and waviness. With the new optical sensor OS 500 and the rotation module RT1 of the company OptoSurf, it is now possible to precisely and rapidly measure the roundness in µm and a waviness of <0.05 µm directly at the processing machine under harsh working conditions. With the simultaneously captured parameter Aq (VDA 2009), the surface roughness can additionally be measured.
